Ahhh, the Grandbois. After leaving England in the sixth century the newly named Grandbois family became quite famous in their own right. Again, with the name to hold up the Grandbois family bought thousands of acres in France in order to grow…yes, you guessed it…trees. This estate is still in operation as a national park. The parkland of the estate features a rare and impressive collection of trees, including Giant Sequoias, California Cedars, Douglas Pines, Magnolias, Palm trees and Virginia tulip trees, as well as the more typical southern natives such as Holm oaks, olive trees and bamboo. The park comprises a succession of terraces layered into the mountains, with lakes, waterfalls and natural springs. There are pathways and streams through the hills and forests that link through to the door-step of the National Park. Every lake on the estate is a perfect oval.

The large Grandbois board is what we call the crème de la crème of boards. It just so happens that one of the finest ladies I have ever known gave me this board to produce for her. Her name is Sandy Myer and she owns a store in Illinois named “Crème de la Crème” Coincidence?…I don’t think so. This board is in honor of my friend Sandy.

This board is also described as a “trencher” as the center is trenched out to catch all the juices. This term was originally used long ago for loaves of bread that were hollowed out and used as plates to eat off of. Of course this was in the middle ages in Somerset and Wiltshire counties.
